Hypocrisy

I read this passage today:

“Determined wrongdoers, already ignoring existing statutes and safety measures, are unlikely to be convinced to adopt safe practices by a new overlay of regulations.”

My first reaction was that this is a passage about gun control, and an argument against further restrictions, made by a conservative Supreme Court justice.

It isn’t. It is an argument against further regulations on abortion clinics despite the crimes of Kermit Gosnell, who Pennsylvania regulators turned a blind eye toward as he killed multiple women and babies.

In both examples – guns and abortions – it’s true that more regulations won’t necessarily stop wrongdoers. However, failing to enforce those regulations certainly enables the wrongdoers. I’m unclear the last time I found activists on either side put any more than a begrudging effort into stopping the wrongdoers who benefit from that very same activism.
